Special 26 is a 2013 Indian Hindi-language period heist thriller film directed by Neeraj Pandey. The film is inspired by the true events of the 1987 Opera House heist. It follows a group of con artists led by Akshay Kumar’s character, who pose as CBI officers and conduct fake raids on politicians and businessmen to rob them of their black money. The plot thickens as the real CBI, led by Manoj Bajpayee’s character, begins to track them down, leading to a cat-and-mouse chase. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Jimmy Sheirgill, Kajal Aggarwal, and others.
The story opens with a fake CBI interview, which transitions into a flashback of various clever robberies carried out by the gang. As they continue their heists across the country, they plan their biggest and final raid. However, this time they are pursued by a determined CBI officer who is closing in on their operation.
Special 26 received widespread critical acclaim for its storytelling and performances, and it was a commercial success, grossing over ₹103 crore. The film’s engaging plot and thrilling narrative made it one of the standout films of the year. It was later remade in Tamil as “Thaanaa Serndha Koottam” starring Suriya.
