The Premise

The film follows the journey of a group of women from Kerala who find themselves ensnared in a web of deceit and manipulation. The plot centers around Shalini Unnikrishnan, a young woman with aspirations of becoming a nurse, only to have her dreams shattered as she is coerced by extremist Muslims in her college, who pose as friends, into joining the Islamic State.

The Characters

Adah Sharma portrays Shalini Unnikrishnan, whose transformation from an ambitious student to Fatima Ba, a converted Muslim woman, forms the crux of the story. Yogita Bihani plays Nimah Mathews, a character who represents the voice of reason amidst the chaos. Sonia Balani’s portrayal of Asifa Ba, the antagonist, is chilling as she embodies the fanaticism that drives the narrative. Siddhi Idnani as Geethanjali Menon, another victim of the coercion, adds depth to the ensemble.

The Narrative

The film opens with Shalini’s life in Kerala, where her passion for nursing is evident. Her journey takes a drastic turn when she meets Asifa, a radicalized individual who runs a ring that brainwashes young girls into converting to Islam and subsequently sends them to war-torn regions like Syria and Afghanistan. The story unfolds as Shalini, along with her friends Geethanjali and Nimah, falls prey to Asifa’s manipulative tactics.

The Coercion

Asifa’s influence is pervasive, as she introduces the girls to her cousins, Rameez and Abdul, who are instrumental in the brainwashing process. A harrowing incident where the girls are molested by a group of boys, orchestrated by Asifa, serves as a catalyst for their conversion. Asifa’s twisted logic convinces them that wearing a hijab could have prevented the assault, playing into their vulnerabilities.

The Downward Spiral

The film captures the gradual descent of Shalini and Geethanjali as they alienate their families and succumb to the extremist ideologies. Nimah, however, remains skeptical, seeing through Asifa’s flawed ideologies. Despite her resistance, the narrative highlights the powerful grip of radicalization on the vulnerable minds of the young women.

The Climax

“The Kerala Story” reaches its climax as Shalini, now Fatima Ba, finds herself imprisoned in Afghanistan, a far cry from the life she envisioned. The film’s ending leaves the audience with a haunting question: Where is Shalini now? This open-ended conclusion serves as a stark reminder of the countless real-life stories that remain untold.
