The film was theatrically released on December 1, 2023 in both traditional and IMAX format and received a mixed response from critics. As of December 3, 2023, the film has grossed a total of Rs. 420.87 crore.
Bollywood Hungama gave a 4.5/5 star rating to Animal, praising R.B. Kapoor's "fantastic overall performance", "clumsy scenes" and "c program language period block".
Sukanya Verma gave the film a four/5 star rating and wrote, Animal is relentless, a euphoric blend of wild rage and the dance of the dysfunction. The twists keep coming till you can't help but stop yourself as more and more blood is spilled.
Firstpost gave the film a three-and-a-half star rating and said, Animal is an adrenaline-filled ride that has polarising perspectives, but you can't deny its interesting quandary, breathtaking performances, and storytelling.
Puja Aaghlave of The Week gave the film a 3.5 out of 5 star rating, writing, "Animal", for all its gore, is a story of a son's aching desire for his father's approval
Monika Rawal of Hindustan Times described it as "an absolutely massive, fantastic and extremely violent thriller that does not accept the idea that it is true and conforms to the norms", while also noting that the extreme violence may be disturbing to some viewers.
She gave it a 3.5/5 star rating, describing it as "dark, loud, garish but also quite unapologetic" and thought that it "breathes life into this unfortunate person with a lot of charm and swag" and praised the performance of Mr. Kapoor as "the first-rate element" despite the fact that it is "brilliantly made and interesting" and "extra similarly through the other high-quality performances" by Mr. Kapoor.
Abhimanyu Matur of DNA India gave it a three.5/5 rating and opined that Animal "takes the whole lot that has become complex and will raise it by many notches" and that it is "by far the most violent Hindi film that I have ever seen".
On the other hand, Renuka Vijavahare gave 2.5/5 stars to the movie, calling it "all gimmicks and no substance" and "a cycle of relatives drama". She was critical of how Vanga's movie dealt with women or violence, but praised the actor for his "uncooked intercourse enchantment" and "unparalleled depth".
Anvita Singh of India Today gave the movie a 2/5 star. Anvita said that Ranbir is "stunning" in this "arrangement-laden, paper-thin movie" and "he is the star of the show".
On Scroll.In, Neelanjali Ramnath said, "Even at his reptile-eyed best, Kapoor's extremely good overall performance in Animal makes it hard to stomach but equally hard to ignore."
