Dunki is an Indian Hindi language comedy drama film set to release in 2023. The film is based on the illegal immigration technique known as "Donkey flight". The film is directed and edited by R.K. Hirani, and is produced by Red Chillies entertainment, Jio studios and rajkumar hirani films. The film is starring Shah Rukh khan, Taapsee pannu, Vicky kaushal (in a special appearance), and Boman irahai. The film was officially launched in April 2022, and principal photography began in the same month.


Filming took place sporadically over several legs until late April 2023. Filming locations included Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kashmir, Budapest, London, Jeddah, and Neom. Pritam has composed the music, Aman Pant has composed the background score, C.K. Muraleederharan is in charge of cinematography, Manush nandan, and Amit Roy is in charge of editing.


Dunki was released theatrically all over the world on December 21, 2023. The film received mixed reviews from the critics. The film grossed ₹ 460.11 crore (USD 58 million) worldwide on a ₹ 120 crore (US$ 15 million) production and marketing budget, making it the 6th highest grossing Hindi movie of 2023, and the 9th highest grossing Indian movie of 2023.  Dunki was nominated for 9 times at Filmfare Awards at the 69th Annual Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor (Khan) and Best Actress (Pannu).


In the year 2020, an old Manu Rajhawa escapes from a London hospital and meets an immigration lawyer, Puru Patel, who she asks to help her reunite with her former lover, Hardayal “Hardy” Sing Dhillon, in the village of Laltu in Punjab. An old Hardy is overjoyed to receive a call from Manu after 25 years, and asks him to come to Dubai to bring her home via Dunki route as she is facing difficulties in getting an Indian visa to come to London.


Manu and her childhood friend Buggu and her younger brother Balli have been living in their village since 1995, and they dream of immigrating to London in search of a better life, but due to their poverty and lack of education, they have not been able to get a visa. 




One day Hardy, a former army officer, comes to their village, having saved their brother Mahinder's life in battle, and he returns his personal belongings to them, only to find Mahinder has passed away in an accident. Hardy promises Manu that he will help her get to London in exchange for her brother’s kindness.

Dunki made the thirteenth-largest advance booking of all-time for a Hindi movie.On the first day of its release, Dunki grossed a total of Rs. 28.5 crore in India. The film had a net domestic collection of Rs.20 crore on the second day and Rs.24.5 crore on the third day. Dunki has grossed Rs.259.28 crore in India as of 15 January 2024. The film has earned Rs.200.83 crore in overseas receipts for a worldwide total of Rs. 460.11 crore.

Rediff.com’s Sukanya Verma said, “Dunki’s ambition is high, but its weak premise makes this nearly three-hour odyssey into far-fetched adventures almost impossible to believe.” While Scroll.in called the film “flat” and “unfunny”, and noted that Khan’s “dimpled charm” and the “spirited turns of Taapsee (Pannu), Vikram (Kochchar) and Anil (Grover) briefly brighten up the otherwise dreary film”.


The Indian Express’ Shubhash Gupta gave the film 1.5 stars and called it a “crashing bore”, calling it “Hirani’s weakest film”.Gulf News’ Manjusha Rangarrishnan gave the film a 4/5 rating and wrote, “Illegal migration and illegal cross-border migrants are serious problems, but director Hirani humanizes them with a heart-warming story”.
